RIGA, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- COVID-19 infections are spreading in Latvia at an accelerating rate, and five people died from the disease last week, the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) reported on Tuesday.

According to the latest epidemiological data, the percentage of positive COVID-19 tests rose to 18.9 percent last week, up from 17.3 percent two weeks ago and 12.3 percent three weeks ago.

Hospitals recorded 45 new COVID-19 admissions during the week. Of the 81 hospitalized patients with coronavirus, 26 people, 32.1 percent, were treated for COVID-19 as their primary diagnosis, the CDC said.

Five patients with confirmed infections died last week, and officials noted that a similar epidemiological situation was seen during the same period last year.

Wastewater monitoring also confirmed an increased circulation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, with Omicron KP.3 currently the dominant subvariant.

The CDC added that renewed COVID-19 vaccines, Comirnaty LP.8.1, adapted to the currently circulating virus variants, are now available in Latvia.
