VIENTIANE, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Lao-Russian joint military exercise Laros 2025 has kicked off at the Kommadam Academy of the Lao People's Armed Forces (LPAF) in Laos, with the theme "Shoulder to Shoulder, Fighting for Peace and Security."
The drills held on Monday mark the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Laos and Russia, highlighting the long-standing friendship and strategic partnership between the two nations, founded on mutual respect, trust, and cooperation, Lao national TV reported on Tuesday.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Lao Deputy Minister of National Defense Saychai Kommasith emphasized that the joint drill is essential for strengthening military ties and enhancing operational coordination between the two armed forces.
The exercise focuses on joint command-and-control training, counter-terrorism operations, and improving combat readiness, particularly in complex terrain and under challenging weather conditions. Training will involve the deployment of armored infantry and special forces units, as well as the use of modern military vehicles and weaponry.
Beyond combat training, the program also includes cultural and ideological exchanges aimed at fostering mutual understanding and camaraderie. Activities feature joint sports events, art and literature exchanges, language learning sessions, and daily interactions between personnel from both countries.
Running from Sept. 15 to Sept. 25, the exercise seeks to deepen bilateral defense cooperation and improve the effectiveness of joint military operations, thereby contributing to regional peace and security. ■
