Among the four Chinese sites newly added to the World Heritage Irrigation Structures (WHIS) list is Yunnan's Hani Terraces.
Located in Yuanyang County in Honghe Prefecture, the terraces are renowned not only for their picturesque landscapes, but also for the unique farming culture of the Hani people.
Over the past 1,300 years, the Hani people have developed a complex system of channels to bring water from the forested mountaintops to the terraces. This forms a symbiotic agricultural ecosystem of forests, villages, terraces, and rivers.
