JERUSALEM, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli military said on Thursday that a dozen senior Houthi officials were killed in the airstrikes on a meeting point in Sanaa last week.

The strikes last Thursday targeted a military facility in the Yemeni capital used by senior Houthi commanders, where military officials and government ministers were present, the military said in a statement.

It did not name the officials, but the Houthis confirmed last week that Prime Minister Ahmed Ghaleb al-Rahawi of the Houthi-run government was among those killed.

Also on Thursday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz vowed a strong response to recent Houthi attacks on Israel.

Earlier on Thursday, the group fired a missile that struck outside Israel and launched two drones that were intercepted. On Wednesday, it fired two missiles, including a rarely used cluster surface-to-surface missile, which disperses multiple explosive submunitions over a wide area. The Israeli military said its air defense systems intercepted both missiles.

On Monday, Houthi forces claimed responsibility for a missile strike in the Red Sea that hit the Israeli-owned tanker, Scarlet Ray.

The group, which controls much of northern Yemen, has been firing missiles and drones at Israel since November 2023, saying the attacks are in support of Palestinians in the Gaza war. Israel has responded with strikes on Houthi-held areas, including Sanaa and the Red Sea port of Hodeidah.
