SANAA/JERUSALEM, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's Houthi group on Wednesday claimed launching a "hypersonic ballistic missile" attack targeting central Israel's Ben Gurion Airport in the morning.

The attack was "successful," disrupting air traffic and forcing thousands of Israelis into shelters, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea said in a statement aired by Houthi-run al-Masirah TV.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli military said in a statement that air raid sirens sounded in Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank after a ballistic missile was launched from Yemen.

Air defense systems were activated and intercepted the missile, the military said.

Magen David Adom, Israel's national rescue service, said it received no reports of casualties or missile impacts.

The Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen, have carried out drone and missile attacks on Israel since November 2023 in what they describe as solidarity with Palestinians during the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Most of the projectiles have been intercepted by Israeli defenses.

Israel has responded with strikes on Houthi-held areas, targeting airports, power stations, and ports in Sanaa and Hodeidah.
