LISBON, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Portuguese postal operator CTT announced on Monday that it will suspend the shipment of parcels to the United States, according to a statement published on its website.

The measure will take effect on Tuesday. CTT explained that the move is linked to changes in the "de minimis" regime, introduced by U.S. President Donald Trump last month, which will take effect on Aug. 29.

Under the new rules, tariff exemptions will be removed, and all shipments will become subject to customs duties.

According to the CTT statement, excluded from the suspension are mail items sent to the U.S. that contain only "documents" and "gifts between private individuals valued at under 100 U.S. dollars."

The Portuguese postal service thus joins others in countries such as France, Germany and Italy in suspending the postal shipment of goods to the U.S.

They said the details of new requirements have not yet been fully clarified by U.S. customs authorities and will require operational adjustments by postal services worldwide.
