BAGHDAD, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Over 25 United Nations agencies and organizations will continue their work in Iraq after the conclusion of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), a senior UN official said Thursday.

Mohamed Al Hassan, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq and head of UNAMI, told the official Iraqi News Agency (INA) that "only UNAMI's mandate will conclude, while the work of the United Nations in Iraq will continue, as long as Iraq deems it necessary."

The United Nations will continue to serve the Iraqi people and to support a safe and sustainable path toward openness, democracy, and national development, Al Hassan told INA.

In May 2024, the UN Security Council unanimously decided to extend UNAMI's mandate for a final 19-month period to Dec. 31, 2025, after which the mission will cease all work and operations.

UNAMI is a political mission established by the Security Council in 2003 at the request of the Iraqi government in the wake of the invasion by a U.S.-led coalition. Its main mandate is to provide advice, support, and assistance to the government and people of Iraq in various fields.
