SUVA, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Fijian Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Sakiasi Ditoka has stressed the urgent need for strong and coordinated humanitarian responses as the country and the wider Pacific are repeatedly hit by devastating natural disasters, from cyclones and floods to earthquakes and tsunamis, local media reported on Wednesday.

In a speech marking World Humanitarian Day, Ditoka said the occasion was a crucial opportunity to honor the sacrifices of humanitarian workers who respond to crises, often at great personal risk, Fiji Broadcasting Corporation reported.

The region is considered one of the most disaster-prone in the world, with climate change intensifying both the frequency and severity of natural disasters.

Ditoka said it was the shared responsibility of governments, organizations, and individuals to stand together and ensure no one is left behind when disasters strike.

Ditoka emphasized that the ministry remains focused on building resilience at the community level through training and equipping local populations with the skills and tools to respond effectively.

This year's World Humanitarian Day theme, "Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities," underscores the importance of cooperation and locally driven action in disaster management.
