JAKARTA, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia expects to achieve rice self-sufficiency this year, earlier than the initial target of 2026, the country's Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman said Tuesday.

The minister noted that the country has significantly boosted its rice stockpile to 4 million tons, up from just 1 million tons last year, which he described as the main requirement for securing Indonesia's staple food. He also said no rice imports are expected over the next four months.

On climate conditions, the minister expressed hope that no adverse weather would disrupt rice production through year-end. If all goes as planned, Indonesia could achieve rice self-sufficiency this year.

In January 2025, President Prabowo Subianto said rice self-sufficiency was expected to be reached in 2026.
