JAKARTA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Bali Island, Indonesia's premier tourism hub, on Thursday introduced the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) tap payment system for public transportation, aiming to enhance passenger convenience, senior officials said.
The initiative, which allows users to make payments by tapping without scanning, was jointly promoted by local authorities and Bank Indonesia's Bali branch.
"This payment system aims to support Bali's transportation facilities. Hopefully, it will provide greater convenience to the public," said Erwin Soeriadimadja, head of Bank Indonesia's representative office in Bali, at the launch event in Denpasar, the provincial capital.
He added that the adoption of QRIS in public transport is also expected to encourage more residents and visitors to use buses and other public transportation services.
During the launch ceremony, Bali Governor I Wayan Koster tested a QRIS transaction, accompanied by the head of the provincial transportation agency, I Gde Wayan Samsi Gunarta.
Gunarta noted that 75 buses operating on the island have already been equipped with the QRIS tap payment system.
According to Indonesian authorities, the QRIS rollout is intended to provide the public with more options for conducting financial transactions without disrupting other payment systems, including those from other countries. ■
