VIENTIANE, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Lao officials and the public recognize the media's vital role in driving national development and expanding public knowledge in the digital age.
The 75th anniversary of Mass Media and Publishing Day was held in the Lao capital, Vientiane, from Monday to Tuesday, showcasing media and publishing products and offering visitors insight into the industry's history, achievements, and role in promoting socio-economic growth.
Speaking at the event on Tuesday, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone called for modernization, timely reporting, and a stronger focus on digital and online news platforms.
Thanva, a 30-year-old resident of Vientiane, visited the exhibition in search of new books to enjoy.
She said, "For many, the media is the main connection to the world beyond their village or town. With digital platforms expanding, media content can now reach people nationwide instantly."
Thanva expressed hope that the Lao media will share more interesting stories and publish engaging content that appeals to all generations, to help improve public knowledge and protect people against misinformation and fake news.
Namphet, a resident of Vientiane, highlighted the media's essential role in supporting socio-economic development in Laos. She noted that it enhances Laos' global image by sharing stories about the country's culture, development progress, and emerging opportunities.
"We need faster, more accurate reporting and more in-depth analysis of both national and global issues, as this can help improve public knowledge," said Namphet.
The Lao government has emphasized that ongoing efforts are being made to promote digital transformation within the media sector, with a focus on strengthening the skills of media professionals in response to the rapid rise of social media. ■
