KABUL, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Counter-narcotics police have uncovered 185 kg of illicit drugs in eastern Afghanistan's Laghman province, the Ministry of Interior Affairs said in a statement on Saturday.
The seizure, which included 155 kg of opium and 30 kg of heroin, was made during routine operations carried out by the police along a highway linking Nangarhar to the capital Kabul, according to the statement.
In the fight against illegal drug smuggling and purchasing, police have taken into custody 22 individuals in the provinces of Balkh, Farah, Herat, Helmand, Nimroz, and Khost, the ministry said in another statement.
The Afghan interim government has stepped up its crackdown on illicit drugs and those involved in the business, vowing to fight the menace until the country is free from poppy cultivation and substances used in the manufacturing of heroin. ■
