VILNIUS, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The presidium of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) on Wednesday nominated current Minister of Social Security and Labour Inga Ruginiene as the party's candidate for the position of prime minister, according to the Baltic News Service (BNS).
The nomination follows the resignation of Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas on Monday, which triggered the automatic dissolution of the entire cabinet. A new government must now be formed, and the existing three-party coalition agreement will need to be revised accordingly.
The ruling coalition currently holds 86 seats in the Lithuanian parliament. The LSDP is the largest party with 52 seats, followed by Dawn of Nemunas with 19 seats, and the Democratic Union "For Lithuania" with 15.
Ruginiene, 44, was elected to parliament for the first time in 2024. Prior to her political career, she served as chair of the Lithuanian Confederation of Trade Unions. ■
