VLADIVOSTOK, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- A powerful earthquake that struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula last Wednesday caused the southern part of the region to shift nearly two meters southeast, local authorities said Tuesday.

Preliminary geodynamic data showed significant ground movement, with the strongest displacements recorded in the south, the Kamchatka branch of the Federal Research Center of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences said in a statement published on its Telegram channel, adding that the shifts were comparable to those seen after Japan's 2011 Tohoku earthquake.

Smaller shifts were detected near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, said scientists, noting that the pattern of deformation matches early fault models, explaining the stronger impact in Severo-Kurilsk and milder effects in other areas.
