BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Brunei will continue to strengthen sports and recreational infrastructure and programs at the grassroots level to ensure equitable, inclusive and comprehensive access for all people, a minister said at the Legislative Council on Monday.
According to the official media Pelita Brunei, during the first day of the second meeting of the 21st session of Brunei's Legislative Council, Brunei's Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Haji Awang Nazmi bin Haji Awang Mohamad emphasized that these efforts align with the aspiration to cultivate a healthy, resilient and united populace.
The minister said that Brunei will improve and upgrade existing sports facilities, ensuring all sports premises and facilities comply with the established Design and Accessibility Development Guidelines, such as providing ramp access for persons with disabilities and wheelchair-friendly pathways.
Brunei will also provide specialized exercise zones for senior citizens equipped with low-impact exercise equipment suitable for their needs, and create safe and family-friendly spaces, including children's play areas, to encourage more active participation of women and families in sports and recreational activities, said the minister.
The ministry "hopes grassroots sports and recreational facilities will not only serve as mediums for character building and healthy lifestyles but also catalyze community unity and social wellbeing towards balanced and inclusive regional development," he added.
Brunei is located on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia and is the least populous sovereign country in Asia. ■
