DHAKA, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Millions of Bangladeshis, living and working abroad, remitted home nearly 2.5 billion U.S. dollars in July, the first month of the current fiscal year (from July 2025 to June 2026), a senior central bank official said Monday.

Arief Hossain Khan, spokesperson and an executive director of the Bangladesh Bank (BB), told Xinhua that remittances surged 29.5 percent year-on-year to 2.478 billion dollars last month.

The spokesperson expressed satisfaction with the figure, saying remittance usually goes up before and after major Muslim festivals, such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

Bangladeshi expatriates in June sent home 2.82 billion dollars, the third-highest in the country's history, largely buoyed by the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha, which was celebrated here on June 7.

Bangladesh remittances hit an all-time high of over 30 billion dollars in the fiscal year 2024-25, according to the BB.

Remittances mainly come from Middle East countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
