BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Brunei Legislative Council passed a motion on Monday to become a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).
Legislative council members said that such memberships support international efforts toward strengthening parliamentary diplomacy and enhancing bilateral and multilateral ties.
Haji Erywan Mohd Yusof, second minister of foreign affairs, said Brunei legislative council membership to the IPU and the CPA enables the exchange of ideas on global challenges and sharing unique values of the country internationally.
Haji Suyoi Osman, a legislative council member, said becoming a full member to the IPU and the CPA is a strategic step and in line with Brunei's aspiration to strengthen the role of the legislative council.
Awang Zainol Mohamed, another legislative council member, said Brunei's membership builds more responsive, transparent and professional work structures of the legislative council. ■
