BEIRUT, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The container traffic at the Port of Beirut reached nearly 100,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in July, the highest recorded at the container terminal since 2019, according to a statement issued Friday by the port's management and investment authority.
The figure marks a 39 percent increase compared to the same month in 2024, which saw 72,000 TEUs, according to the statement.
The authority attributed the recent improvement to enhanced infrastructure, smoother logistics, and the renewed trust of international shipping lines, many of which have reinstated Beirut as a regular stop on their routes.
It noted that the strong performance reflects growing momentum in the port's operational capacity and signals its return as a key maritime hub in the eastern Mediterranean.
This growth comes five years after the catastrophic Beirut port explosions in August 2020, which devastated large parts of the port, killed over 200 people, injured thousands, and severely disrupted operations for years. ■
