NEW DELHI, July 29 (Xinhua) -- At least five persons on a pilgrimage died and over 17 were injured when their vehicle met with a road accident in India's eastern state of Jharkhand on Tuesday, confirmed the local police.
The road mishap occurred in Jharkhand's Deoghar district. The deceased were on a month-long annual pilgrimage called "Kanwar Yatra" during which they fetch Ganga river water from Haridwar area in northern hilly state of Uttarakhand and take it to their respective homes.
Those undertaking the pilgrimage are referred to as "Kanwariyas."
"A bus coming from Mohanpur carrying Kanwariyas collided with a truck transporting gas-cylinders. Five Kanwariyas have died in the incident. All the injured people have been taken to the district hospital for better treatment," Inspector General of Police (Dumka Zone) Shailendra Kumar Sinha told the media.
The process of identification of the deceased was going on. ■
