BAGHDAD, July 28 (Xinhua) -- A severe heatwave is sweeping across Iraq, with temperatures surpassing 50 degrees Celsius on Monday in 13 provinces, the Iraqi Meteorological Organization and Seismology said in a statement.
The highest temperature of 51 degrees Celsius was recorded in the provinces of Baghdad, Wasit, Maysan, Dhi Qar, and Basra, while the provinces of Kirkuk, Salahuddin, Diyala, Karbala, Babil, Najaf, Diwaniyah, and Muthanna recorded 50 degrees Celsius, the statement said.
The organization urges people to avoid direct sun exposure and outdoor work during peak heat, warning of risks such as fainting and heat exhaustion. It advises residents to stay hydrated and remain indoors, particularly during the afternoon hours.
On Monday, several Iraqi provinces implemented changes to their working hours due to the extreme heat. Karbala provincial governor directed a two-hour reduction in working hours for both Monday and Tuesday. The Dhi Qar provincial council declared Monday a public holiday.
Iraq regularly endures scorching summers with temperatures surpassing 50 degrees Celsius, prompting provincial governments to reduce working hours or declare holidays. ■
