COLOMBO, July 26 (Xinhua) -- The Sri Lankan government aims to boost tea exports to 2.5 billion U.S. dollars by 2030 as part of a new five-year plan for the tea industry, a minister told journalists on Saturday.

Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure Samantha Viddyarathna said that the government aims to increase the annual production of finished tea to 400 million metric tons by 2030 and enhance tea quality through technical support.

As part of this strategy, the government will introduce subsidized loan programs for various industry stakeholders. One measure includes a 40,000 rupee (about 130 dollars) fertilizer subsidy per hectare for tea growers.

Tea remains a key source of foreign revenue for Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka earned 1.43 billion dollars from tea exports in 2024.
