NEW DELHI, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Indian police Saturday killed three Naxals in a fierce gunfight in the eastern state of Jharkhand, officials said.

The gunfight broke out in the Ghaghra police station area of Gumla district, about 100 km west of Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand.

"The bodies of all three Naxals have been recovered. An AK-47 and two INSAS rifles have also been recovered from the spot," a police official said.

The policemen have not suffered any damage in the stand-off.

Reports said police had received specific intelligence information about the presence of Naxals in the area planning an attack on government forces.

India's federal government has resolved to eradicate Naxalism before the 31st of March 2026.

Currently, Naxals are active across the central and eastern parts of India.

The insurgency has reportedly claimed hundreds of lives besides rendering thousands of poor inhabitants homeless.
