LUSAKA, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government has welcomed the findings of a new report that shows a notable fall in financial crimes.

The findings of the Financial Intelligence Center's 10th Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Trends Report reinforce the government's commitment to building a transparent financial system, Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jack Mwiimbu said Wednesday.

The center, established in November 2010, is the government's financial intelligence unit.

Mwiimbu said the report highlights a reduction in public sector corruption cases compared to money laundering, fraud, and tax evasion, underscoring the impact of the government's anti-corruption measures.

"Under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema, the government has declared zero tolerance for corruption and is committed to fighting past, present, and future corruption, with no sacred cows," he said in a statement.

According to the minister, the report recorded a 12.74 percent drop in suspicious transactions, from 10,293 in 2023 to 8,981 in 2024, reflecting improved financial oversight.

He said the results demonstrate that the government's anti-corruption efforts are bearing fruit and indicate progress in the fight against financial crimes.

The recent introduction of robust cyber laws has further strengthened the government's capabilities by enhancing the detection and prevention of sophisticated financial crimes in the digital space, Mwiimbu said.

He said the government remains committed to collaborating with state agencies and other stakeholders to strengthen regulatory frameworks and safeguard Zambia's financial ecosystem.
