DAMASCUS, July 24 (Xinhua) -- A powerful explosion rocked the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib on Thursday, causing casualties and fires near the town of Maarrat Misrin, according to Syrian state-run Ikhbariya TV.

The blast, which occurred near the village of al-Foua in northern Idlib, sent thick columns of smoke into the sky and triggered an emergency response, including ambulances rushing to the scene.

The Emergency Operations Directorate in Idlib confirmed that deaths and injuries occurred as a result of the still-unidentified blast. While the cause of the explosion remains unclear, the private Syria TV reported that it may have originated from an ammunition depot in the area.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported unidentified aircraft flying over the region at the time of the explosion, though no official statement has confirmed any airstrike involvement.

Further details on the number of casualties and the exact cause of the blast are still under investigation.
