SYDNEY, July 23 (Xinhua) -- A motorcyclist has been killed in a collision involving a Sydney police vehicle in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Police in the state of New South Wales (NSW) said the motorcycle was being ridden on a major highway in Parramatta, 20 km west of central Sydney, shortly before 2 a.m. local time on Wednesday, when it collided with a sedan.

The rider, a man who has not been formally identified, was thrown to the road, where he was subsequently struck by a marked police vehicle.

Officers immediately commenced CPR until ambulance paramedics arrived on the scene. He was taken to a nearby hospital but could not be revived.

The driver of the sedan and a Senior Constable, both men, were taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

NSW Police said the police vehicle was not on urgent duty, did not have its lights or sirens activated and was not engaged in a pursuit of the motorcycle or any other vehicle at the time of the collision.

A critical incident has been declared and an investigation into the collision will be subject to an independent review by NSW Police's Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, which are standard steps for any fatal incident involving a police officer.
