ISTANBUL, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Turkish police rounded up 835 suspects in a sweeping public safety operation across Istanbul, the city's police department said on Wednesday.
The operation, conducted on Tuesday evening, involved nearly 3,000 officers, with aerial support from a police helicopter and maritime assistance. Authorities also carried out inspections at public venues.
Some 390 people wanted for various offenses were among those detained, according to the department.
During the inspections, police seized 22 unlicensed pistols, five rifles, 125 rounds of ammunition and 1,520 grams of drugs, among others.
The Istanbul Police Department has been regularly carrying out such operations to maintain public order and ensure the safety of residents across the city of 15 million people. ■
