BUJUMBURA, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The district councilors elected during Burundi's June 5 elections went to the polls on Wednesday to choose 10 senators -- two from each of the country's five provinces.
According to the Burundian constitution, each province is entitled to one senator from the Hutu ethnic group and one from the Tutsi ethnic group. In addition, three senators will be co-opted, bringing the total number of senators to 13 for the next five-year term.
In four provinces, namely Bujumbura, Burunga, Butanyerera and Gitega, the turnout for the senatorial elections was 100 percent, while in Buhumuza Province, 174 out of the 175 district councilors participated in the voting.
Vote counting took place after the closing of the polling operation, with the ruling National Council for the Defense of Democracy-Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) winning all 10 seats in the five provinces, as reported by the local media.
During the combined legislative and district elections held on June 5, the ruling CNDD-FDD secured an overwhelming victory, winning most of the 1,050 seats in district councils.
Burundi is scheduled to hold village-level elections on Aug. 25. The next presidential election is slated for 2027. ■
