YANGON, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar has targeted to import 1.6 million tons of fertilizer and 32,000 tons of pesticides in the 2025-26 fiscal year, the state-owned daily The Mirror reported Tuesday, citing the Steering Committee for Purchasing and Distribution of Urea Fertilizer.
At the committee's meeting in Nay Pyi Taw on Monday, the committee's chairman Union Minister for Cooperatives and Rural Development U Hla Moe said that steps are being taken to ensure farmers have access to the necessary inputs, both in supply and distribution, to meet the target yield, the report said.
The report added that as of the end of June 2025, over 438,705 tons of fertilizer and over 9,840 tons of pesticides had been imported.
The union minister also said that the Myanmar Fertilizer, Seed, and Pesticide Entrepreneurs Association must make arrangements according to the needs of various regions, the report said.
At the same meeting, the minister emphasized the need to ensure fair prices for local farmers and called on committee members to work collaboratively to oversee the distribution process, it added. ■
