JAKARTA, July 21 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has introduced a new quake-resistant building construction design that could serve as a reference for mitigating the risks of megathrust earthquakes, BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati said on Monday.

Dwikorita explained that the construction incorporates the latest generation of earthquake-damping technology, enabling buildings to withstand megathrust zone earthquakes of up to 8.8 magnitude.

She emphasized that the technology allows multi-story buildings to remain stable during major earthquakes, making it a significant advancement in disaster-resilient infrastructure.

According to Dwikorita, this is the first time such technology will be implemented in Indonesia.

While the BMKG does not hold authority over the construction of public buildings, she expressed hope that this disaster mitigation approach can serve as a model for infrastructure development in the country's earthquake-prone regions.

Regarding implementation, Dwikorita noted that the technology has already been applied to a building that houses Indonesia's Multi-hazard Early Warning System, located at BMKG headquarters in Jakarta.
