WELLINGTON, July 19 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand's government has unveiled a new public research institution to grow the country's tech sector and boost high-value exports.

The New Zealand Institute for Advanced Technology (NZIAT) is designed to convert world-class science into commercial success and enhance the country's global competitiveness, Science, Innovation and Technology Minister Shane Reti said on Friday.

The NZIAT will focus on breakthrough fields including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and synthetic biology with transformative potential for industry and exports, Reti said.

The government has pledged an initial investment of 231 million NZ dollars (138 million U.S. dollars) over four years to fostering emerging technologies, developing technical expertise, driving innovation, and commercializing new technologies.

New Zealand's success in agri-tech has built its global reputation for advanced agricultural science, the minister said, adding the new institute will build on existing strengths while advancing into new technologies to boost innovation, economic growth, and global impact.
