HANOI, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in Vietnam's capital Hanoi are developing a support mechanism to help residents switch from petrol-powered motorcycles to electric ones, with a plan to ban fossil fuel motorcycles in the inner city area starting from July 2026, local media VnExpress reported Tuesday.
Duong Duc Tuan, vice chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, said the city is preparing to subsidize nearly all transition-related costs, including vehicle registration fees and initial registration tax, for approximately 450,000 petrol-powered motorcycles currently used by residents within the designated zone.
The city also intends to expand its fleet of small electric buses from eight to 12-seater and four-seater electric vehicles to serve the inner-city area. Charging stations will be installed at public parking lots and within residential buildings, according to the official.
The upcoming ban on fossil fuel motorcycles follows an order issued last week by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh aimed at curbing worsening air pollution in the capital. ■
