KABUL, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan has achieved self-sufficiency in the production of salt and banned its import to the country, according to deputy spokesman for the Afghan interim government Hamdullah Fitrat.
"Afghanistan has achieved self-sufficiency in the field of salt production and therefore the Economic Commission of the government has banned imports of all kinds of salt to support local production," the state-run Radio and Television of Afghanistan (RTA) quoted Fitrat as saying on Sunday night.
The post-war Afghanistan needs 300,000 tons of salt annually while producing 344,000 tons of good quality salt, including 40,000 tons of salt for animals from 12 salt mines across the country, Fitrat said. ■
