ULAN BATOR, July 8 (Xinhua) -- A total of 50 marmots have been recently reintroduced in the eastern Mongolian province of Dornod, the provincial Department of Environment and Tourism said Tuesday.

The move is part of the country's efforts to maintain ecological balance, reduce soil degradation and desertification, and restore damaged pastures, the department said in a statement.

Marmots living in Mongolia are represented by two species -- the grey marmot and the Siberian marmot. The habitat characteristics of these species cover an area of about 235,000 square kilometers, which is 15.6 percent of the entire territory of Mongolia.
