KIGALI, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Celebrations for the 4th World Kiswahili Language Day kicked off Sunday in Kigali, Rwanda's capital, highlighting Kiswahili's role as a catalyst for regional integration, inclusive education, and sustainable development.

Co-hosted by Rwanda and the East African Kiswahili Commission, the two-day celebrations are held under the theme of "Kiswahili, Inclusive Education and Sustainable Development," which will examine relevant policies, best practices, and stakeholder engagement.

The event drew more than 300 participants, including senior government officials, delegates from East African Community (EAC) partner states, academics, Kiswahili experts, and university students.

EAC Deputy Secretary General Andrea Aguer Ariik Malueth addressed participants that Kiswahili, beyond being a language, is a tool for equity, access, and empowerment.

"We believe Kiswahili offers a unique solution to this challenge. As one of the most widely spoken African languages, and the only African language recognized by the African Union, Kiswahili can bridge gaps between policy and people, education and equity, tradition and innovation," he said.

Rwandan Minister of State in Charge of Regional Cooperation James Kabarebe emphasized the importance of Kiswahili in advancing unity and development, especially within the EAC bloc.

"Promoting the Kiswahili language within the East African Community strengthens cultural unity and facilitates cooperation in various projects and initiatives," he said.

The two-day event will feature a regional symposium, youth engagement sessions, and an exhibition. Participants, including young people, will explore how Kiswahili, artificial intelligence, and inclusive education can advance a culture of peace and drive innovative initiatives.
