KABUL, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Afghan authorities have laid the foundation stone for a new sports complex in eastern Khost province, aiming to promote youth engagement and community development, an official said on Friday.

The complex, estimated to cost around 4 million U.S. dollars, would be constructed within 14 months on a 10-acre land in Khost City, the capital of the province, said Ahmadullah Wassiq, acting head of the General Directorate of Physical Education and Sports, during the project's opening ceremony.

Wassiq stated that the complex will include standard sports grounds for football, volleyball, as well as an administrative building, green zone, and all necessary facilities.

The Afghan interim government has launched initiatives to expand access to modern sports infrastructure across various provinces. These efforts aim to provide safe and well-equipped facilities that encourage youth participation in sports and promote social cohesion within the community.
