KABUL, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Afghan authorities officially inaugurated a major water supply network in south Afghanistan's Kandahar province on Thursday, a local official reported Friday.

Financially supported by the Ministry of Finance, the network was built for 423 million afghani (more than 6 million U.S. dollars) with a water storage capacity of 3,100 cubic meters on the outskirts of Police District 12, Kandahar City, the capital of the province, said the general director of the provincial water supply department.

The official stated that the project is expected to provide potable water to around 70,000 residents in nearby communities.

Afghanistan has faced prolonged drought for years, with most provinces experiencing severe shortages of drinking water. The Afghan interim government has launched efforts to address the crisis by constructing dams, water supply networks, and irrigation canals across the poverty-stricken country to improve water access and enhance groundwater storage.
