KABUL, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Over 256,000 Afghans returned home from Iran in June, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
"The scale of returns is deeply alarming and demands a stronger and more immediate international response. Afghanistan can not manage this alone," the IOM said in a statement.
The IOM recorded 714,572 Afghan migrants returning from Iran between January and June 2025. The record movement was pushing border resources to the brink, while critical funding gaps hindered the ability of IOM and partners to provide assistance, reaching only 10 percent of those in need, the statement said.
Nearly 7 million Afghan refugees, most of whom are undocumented, are currently living abroad, with most living in Iran and Pakistan. ■
