KABUL, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan has secured full self-sufficiency in 130 sectors and gotten in touch with partial self-sufficiency in an additional 100, the office of the acting deputy prime minister for economic affairs announced on Saturday.
Approximately 6,000 industrial factories are officially operating across the country, contributing to the country's achievement of full self-sufficiency in 130 sectors. Additionally, the country has reached partial self-sufficiency in another 100 sectors, the office said.
Marking significant progress in boosting domestic production and reducing reliance on imports, the factories currently produce around 570 types of goods, including flour, oil, salt, medicine, iron, cement, steel, chemical products, consumer goods, and others, the source added.
Nearly 135,000 Afghan nationals are directly employed in these factories, it noted.
Afghanistan's economy has faced years of challenges due to prolonged conflict, international sanctions, and a lack of infrastructure. Since the Afghan interim government assumed power in August 2021, it has launched efforts to build long-term sustainability, strengthen economic resilience, and promote local production throughout the poverty-stricken country. ■
