BEIRUT, June 27 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and several others were injured on Friday following a series of intense Israeli airstrikes that targeted wide areas in southern Lebanon, according to official and security sources.
A statement from Lebanon's Public Health Emergency Operations Center confirmed that an Israeli airstrike on an apartment in the southern city of Nabatieh killed a woman and injured 11 others.
According to Lebanon's official National News Agency, this marks the second-largest Israeli attack on Nabatieh since the ceasefire agreement that ended hostilities last November. The last major strike occurred in May.
The wave of airstrikes began at around 11:00 a.m. (0800 GMT) Friday, targeting the heights of Kfar Tebnit, Upper Nabatieh, and Kfar Remen, in an area extending from Israel's former military outposts at Dabsha Hill and Ali al-Taher. Israeli fighter jets reportedly launched more than 20 airstrikes within 15 minutes.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam strongly condemned the Israeli attacks, calling them a "blatant violation of Lebanon's national sovereignty" and of the ceasefire arrangements reached in November. He warned that such actions pose a serious threat to the fragile stability Lebanon is trying to maintain.
In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said its air force targeted a Hezbollah site on the Beaufort Ridge in southern Lebanon. The IDF claimed the site had been used by Hezbollah to manage its fire and defense array, and was part of a major underground infrastructure project that has now been rendered inoperable due to the strikes.
"The IDF had detected prior attempts by Hezbollah to rehabilitate the site and accordingly targeted terror infrastructure in the area," the statement said. "The presence of this site and efforts to rebuild it constitute a clear violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon."
The IDF added that it "will not tolerate Hezbollah's attempts to re-establish operations at the site and will continue to act against any threat posed to Israel."
Hezbollah and Israel reached a ceasefire in November 2024, bringing an end to over a year of hostilities that had been fueled by the war in Gaza. However, Israeli strikes have continued intermittently, with the military citing the need to neutralize Hezbollah threats. ■
