KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia registered an inflation rate of 1.2 percent in May, marking the lowest rate in 51 months, official data showed Tuesday.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia said in a statement that the slower inflation trend recorded by Malaysia, as an open economy, was in tandem with the decline in global oil prices.

The decline was also reflected through producer price index for local production, which registered a negative 3.4 percent in April.

The mining sector was the main contributor with a negative 17.8 percent.

The food and beverages group, which contributes 29.8 percent of the total consumer price index (CPI) weight, increased slower at 2.1 percent in May.

Meanwhile, the monthly headline inflation increased 0.1 percent in May compared to April.
