AMMAN, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Jordan's King Abdullah II on Sunday emphasized the urgent need for increased international efforts to achieve comprehensive calm in the region, cautioning against the ramifications of escalating tensions.
The king, in a phone conversation with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, reaffirmed that Jordan would not permit its territory to be used for any military conflict, nor would it tolerate any threat to its security, stability, or the safety of its citizens.
According to a statement from the Royal Hashemite Court, the king underscored the importance of intensifying global efforts to de-escalate regional tensions, warning of the serious repercussions of continued instability.
He also stressed the need for sustained international focus on the situation in Gaza and the West Bank, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the delivery of sufficient humanitarian aid to the Strip, and a halt to escalations in the West Bank and Jerusalem.
Starmer's office stated on Sunday that the British prime minister told the leaders of Jordan and Oman that Iran should return to the negotiating table and that an escalation of the situation in the Middle East was in no one's interest. ■
