PHNOM PENH, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Monday visited thousands of citizens who voluntarily evacuated to a safety center in Preah Vihear province after a recent military clash with Thailand.
In a post on his official social media platforms, Hun Manet said a total of 1,282 families, with 3,850 individuals, have been evacuated to a safety shelter in a pagoda.
"I would like to sincerely thank the leaders, civil servants, armed forces, and all relevant institutions across Preah Vihear province for their dedication and commitment in assisting citizens evacuating from high-risk border areas," he said.
Border tensions between the two neighbors have mounted recently after soldiers of both countries briefly exchanged gunfire in a disputed border area on May 28, resulting in the death of a Cambodian soldier. ■
