VIENTIANE, June 19 (Xinhua) -- To ensure timely and effective disaster preparedness during the 2025 rainy season, the Lao government is urging officials at all levels to closely monitor conditions and implement response plans for potential hazards, including floods, disease outbreaks, agricultural pests, and seasonal illnesses.
The Central Disaster Management Committee issued a notice instructing officials at all levels to prepare for floods, landslides, storms, dengue fever outbreaks, plant pests, seasonal illnesses, and other potential threats.
The notice, released on Wednesday, requires officials to review and update disaster response plans, establish clear strategies for prevention, emergency response, and recovery, and ensure adequate resources in place.
Highlighting the importance of risk reduction and prevention, the plan urges local committees to develop targeted emergency plans, conduct regular simulation drills, and enhance coordination across sectors.
Authorities will closely monitor rainfall and Mekong River water levels and issue timely alerts through media and digital platforms. Officials are urged to prepare rescue teams, equipment, and vehicles, while conducting regular emergency drills.
The industry and commerce sector will oversee dam operations to prevent downstream flooding and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply. Meanwhile, the technology and communications sector will maintain reliable mobile and internet services in high-risk areas.
The education sector will inspect school facilities and educate students on disaster safety. Additionally, health authorities will prepare mobile health units, emergency medicines, and water sanitation services. The public works and transport sector will focus on repairing and maintaining roads, bridges, and drainage systems to reduce flood-related disruptions.
In addition, all sectors must monitor meteorological alerts and swiftly inform at-risk communities. Coordination between central and local authorities is essential, with transparent reporting before, during, and after any disaster. ■
