VIENTIANE, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Laos and Thailand have reaffirmed their commitment to jointly combat drug trafficking and maintain peace along their shared border.
Top military and border security officials from Laos and Thailand met in southern Laos' Savannakhet province from Sunday to Tuesday to discuss strategies for tackling drug-related issues along their shared border, Lao People's Army News reported on Wednesday.
The meeting focused on implementing agreements from previous meetings and enhancing cooperation in tackling drug-related issues along the Lao-Thai border. Both sides agreed on ensuring the border remains peaceful, secure, and free from drug-related activities.
The two countries also agreed to develop a more unified and efficient plan to address the drug problem to transform the border into a zone of peace, stability, and cooperation. This aligns with broader regional and international efforts to create drug-free communities.
To further strengthen cooperation, both sides signed a memorandum of understanding on information sharing and joint operations against drug trafficking. ■
