VIENTIANE, June 18 (Xinhua) -- The National Assembly (NA) of Laos is reviewing a new draft Law on General Education aimed at improving the quality, accessibility, and governance of education throughout the country.
Speaking during the ninth ordinary session of the Lao National Assembly's ninth legislature on Wednesday, Samlan Phankhavong, Lao deputy minister of education and sports, introduced the draft law, outlining principles, regulations, and measures to enhance the management of general education in line with the Constitution, national development strategies, and relevant laws.
The new law aims to reduce student dropout rates and strengthen the responsibility of parents, guardians, communities, and society in encouraging school attendance, particularly in compulsory education. It also seeks to promote investment from both the public and private sectors in general education.
Additionally, the law is designed to make the management and administration of education more unified, efficient, and effective, while ensuring education quality aligns with the evolving needs of the modern era.
The law is expected to serve as a foundational framework for the education and sports sectors to develop effective policies, strategies, plans, programs, and legal instruments for the improved management of general education.
It aims to ensure that all Lao citizens have access to quality education that meets regional and international standards. The law is also expected to boost public and stakeholder confidence, attract greater investment in education, and promote shared responsibility.
In addition, it encourages citizens to actively contribute knowledge, resources, and effort toward the development of general education, reinforcing their rights, duties, and obligations in supporting national education goals. ■
