JAKARTA, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's Ministry of Finance has once again canceled the implementation of the excise tax on packaged sweetened beverages (MBDK) for 2025, despite its revenue being included in this year's State Revenue and Expenditure Budget.
Director General of Customs and Excise Djaka Budhi Utama did not provide a detailed explanation for the cancellation. However, he indicated that the ministry still sees potential for implementing the MBDK excise in the future.
"Regarding the implementation of the MBDK, as of now and for the 2025 fiscal year, it will not be enforced. However, it may still be implemented in the future," Djaka said at a press conference on Tuesday.
Djaka added that the Directorate General of Customs and Excise will seek to compensate for the potential revenue shortfall caused by the policy's cancellation. He said the government plans to optimize revenue from other sources to make up for the loss originally expected from the sweetened beverage excise. ■
