ISLAMABAD, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Monday that remittances from overseas Pakistanis remained a cornerstone of the national economy and brought prosperity.
"Their financial contributions are not only an expression of love and responsibility towards their families, but also a powerful pillar supporting Pakistan's economic resilience," the prime minister said in his message on the occasion of the International Day of Family Remittances.
With over 9 million Pakistanis living abroad, he said the Pakistani diaspora remained deeply connected to their roots, indicating their vital contributions to the country through their hard-earned remittances and uplifting families and driving development.
Sharif said that in the current fiscal year, overseas Pakistanis have remitted a record 34.9 billion U.S. dollars, marking a 28.8 percent increase over the previous year, while May 2025 noted 3.7 billion U.S. dollars, a 13.7 percent increase over last year May, adding that the historic figures are a testament to growing confidence in the country's economic policies.
Pakistan would work hand in hand with the Pakistani diaspora, development partners, and all stakeholders to overcome economic challenges and usher in a new era of investment, prosperity, and national progress, the prime minister said. ■
