ISLAMABAD, June 16 (Xinhua) -- The Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency has initiated a crackdown against smoky vehicles in the country's capital city of Islamabad to curb harmful emissions and protect the environment, according to the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination.

The campaign is part of a broader initiative to tackle the capital's worsening air quality, curb harmful vehicular emissions and ensure cleaner air for the residents, a statement from the climate ministry said on Sunday.

On the occasion, Director General of the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency Nazia Zaib Ali said that the ongoing campaign highlighted the country's commitment to upholding environmental regulations and encouraging responsible vehicle maintenance for achieving environmental sustainability and protecting public health from the adverse impacts of air pollution.

Underlining the need for regularly maintaining vehicles to meet legal emission limits, the official said that every resident should contribute to a cleaner urban environment as an environmentally-responsible citizen.

She added that the concerned authorities would continue the vehicle emission testing drive in other parts of Islamabad city in the coming weeks with the goal of enhancing compliance and achieving lasting improvements in air quality.
