MEXICO CITY, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Former Real Madrid and Argentina international midfielder Fernando Gago has been appointed manager of Necaxa for the rest of the 2025 season, the Mexican club said on Thursday.

The 39-year-old replaces compatriot Nicolas Larcamon, who announced his departure earlier in the day ahead of his expected move to Cruz Azul.

"This is a very important day for the club," Necaxa sporting director Jose Hanan told a news conference. "We have the opportunity to welcome Fernando, a man of immense leadership and ability. He comes hungry for success and chose to be here despite receiving other offers."

Gago had been without a club since April, when he ended a turbulent six-month tenure at Boca Juniors.

It will be the Argentine's second job in charge of a Mexican club, having also led Guadalajara last year before leaving to join Boca, where he had two spells as a player.

"I want to tell the fans that I'm here to work, to contribute to the club," Gago said. "I want to thank them for the opportunity they gave me to manage a team in Mexico again. I'm very happy to be here and excited for what's next."

Necaxa will begin its Liga MX Apertura campaign with an away clash against Toluca on July 12.
