KABUL, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Severe flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall have wreaked havoc in northern Afghanistan's Badakhshan province, destroying homes, farmland, and livestock, the Bakhtar News Agency reported on Thursday.
The floods struck several districts in the province, including Teshkan, Khash, and Tagab, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. At least 12 resident houses were destroyed, Bakhtar quoted Mawlawi Mohammad Akram Akbari, director of the provincial disaster management authority, as saying.
In addition to structural damage, the natural disaster has devastated the region's agricultural sector, with more than 1,500 acres of farmland submerged or washed away. Livestock losses have been particularly severe, with an estimated 2,500 animals perishing in the floods, said Akbari.
The Afghanistan meteorological department has predicted further rainfall in the coming days, warning of potential flooding in several parts of the war-ravaged country. ■
